WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Construction continues to be on schedule and within budget on the Football Performance Complex.
In December, head coach Jeff Brohm and director of football strength & conditioning Justin Lovett toured the facility and requested some changes to the original plans. Among them were the addition of 10 more player lockers (for a total of 121), an additional office and the rearrangement of equipment layout in the weight room.
"They were not sweeping changes," said Steve Simmerman, senior associate athletics director for facilities. "And when all was said and done, Jeff felt like we would have everything we need and have as good a facility as there is in the country."
The facility has two roof levels, and the upper portion is complete except for the sealing of the edges. The lower portion should be finished in the next couple of weeks.
Room framing continues on the second and third levels, and drywall installation has begun in some areans. On the lower level, the pouring of floor slabs and the accompanying utility work beneath them is underway. The hydrotherapy tubs in the sports medicine area are being poured, as well.
Other recent work includes masonry on the south side of the weight room and on the loading dock along Northwestern Avenue and the framing of the three-level staircase.
The three-level structure - totaling 110,000 square feet - will include a locker room, team meeting room, position group meeting rooms, player development room, weight room, sports medicine facility, nutrition station and coaches' offices, as well as a grand entrance lobby, which will highlight the Boilermakers' history and tradition.
The state-of-the-art complex will significantly enhance the football student-athlete experience. In addition to the first-class amenities, having all of them located in one facility will result in more efficient use of the student-athletes' time. Currently, football-related facilities are housed in multiple buildings.
The football performance complex is slated to open in August and will be a $65 million project. The complex is being designed by Populous, while construction is being managed by the Hunt Construction Group.
No student fees or state support will be used for the project. It will be debt funded, with future media rights distributions targeted to pay the annual debt service. Purdue Athletics is a self-supporting auxiliary enterprise.
The complex is part of the Football Master Plan, which consists of six points: coaching and support staff, player development, academic support, recruiting, fan engagement, and contemporary facilities.
