WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Tyler Kral was credited with a decision in Purdue's 34-3 loss to third-ranked Iowa in Holloway Gymnasium on Sunday. The Big Ten Conference opening loss brought the Boilermakers to 4-2, while the Hawkeyes picked up their 22nd consecutive conference victory and moved to 3-0.
Kral closed out the dual with a 4-2 decision of Steven Holloway. The two heavyweights were chippy from the opening whistle and the Iowa heavyweight was penalized for unnecessary roughness with 11 seconds remaining in the first period, awarding a point to Kral.
Starting the second stanza from bottom, the redshirt senior added another point with an escape at the 1:37 mark. Holloway got on the board with a takedown at the midway point to tie it at 2-2, but Kral once again escaped take a 3-2 edge.
A solid performance on top erased the Hawkeye's riding time from the second period and earned Kral the riding time point as he rode the final 2:00 out. Kral, who hails from Crown Point, pushed his season record to 12-4 with the victory. His dozen wins are a career best in a season.
In the match prior, it appeared that Purdue's Christian Brunner was heading to sudden victory with Cash Wilcke, but a takedown by the Iowa 197-pounder with just two ticks left clinched a 6-4 decision for the Hawkeyes. Midway through the third period Wilcke held a slight 4-3 lead, however Brunner's ride out in the second period would have evened the score at the end of regulation.
Iowa posted three other decisions, three major decisions and had two technical falls in its first trip to West Lafayette since 2007.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Boilermakers. They'll travel to Las Vegas, Nevada, for the two-day Cliff Keen Wrestling Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The tournament will be contested at the Las Vegas Convention Center and gets underway at noon ET on both days.
