COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Three players put down double-digit kills and three added double-digit dig efforts as the Boilermakers edged Maryland in five sets Wednesday. Purdue won the match 25-18, 24-26, 25-17, 22-25, 15-9 for head coach Dave Shondell's 300th collegiate victory.
Junior Danielle Cuttino put down a match-high 17 kills and added a team-best four blocks, while junior Azariah Stahl posted a 13-kill, 18-dig double double. Redshirt sophomore Sherridan Atkinson followed with 12 kills on a team-leading .471 hitting effort. Redshirt senior Faye Adelaja chipped in eight kills and four blocks, while redshirt freshman Blake Mohler put down seven kills and added four blocks.
Defensively, Stahl and sophomore Brooke Peters managed 18 digs apiece, while freshman Natalie Haben added 11 digs to go with two aces.
The Boilermakers outhit Maryland .279 to .186, outblocked them 9-6 and outdug them 73-53.
The teams split the first 14 points of Set 5, before Purdue rallied for a 15-9 win and the match. Purdue led 5-3 early thanks to three blocks by Mohler. Maryland went up 7-6 forcing a Purdue timeout. The Boilermakers scored five straight out of the break, including back to back putaways by Stahl to go up 11-7 and force a Terrapin timeout. Maryland got a kill out of the timeout, but Purdue ended the set on a 4-1 run, including kills by Stahl and Cuttino and two Terp miscues. The Boilermakers got three kills from Stahl in the final set, which saw the team hit .385 to Maryland's .083 effort.
The Boilermakers came back from an 11-8 deficit to take Set 1 25-18, while hitting at a .429 clip with no errors in 28 swings. Down 11-8, Purdue began chipping away, eventually tying it up at 14 and 15 before taking its first lead at 16-15. Three Maryland miscues helped the Boilermaker cause and Stahl pounded down back to back kills to make it 14-all. From there, Purdue wrapped up the stanza on a 11-4 run. After a tie at 16, Cuttino pounded down three straight kills and Haben added two aces in a 6-0 run. A kill by Evans capped the set.
The Boilermakers trailed 7-5 in Set 2 and eventually went ahead by four at 15-11 but could not close out the win, falling 26-24. The teams split the first eight points, before Maryland managed a two-point lead. A 10-4 Purdue run, including kills by four players, put the Boilermakers on top 15-11. Maryland scored eight of the next 11 to turn the deficit into a one-point lead of its own. Purdue tied it up at 19 and 20, but fell behind 23-20. A pair of Cuttino kills tied it up at 23 and a third thwarted the Terrapins' first set point chance, but a service error and kill tied the match at a set apiece. Cuttino had six kills in the stanza.
Purdue outhit Maryland .294 to .049 en route to a 25-17 Set 3 win. Four players tallied three kills apiece in the stanza. The teams split the first 12 points of the set, but Purdue scored nine of the next 10 to go ahead 15-7. Seven Terrapin errors, an Atkinson kill and an ace by Peters accounted for the points. The Boilermakers went up 17-10 on a kill by Adelaja, but Maryland used a 6-2 run to cut the margin to three at 19-16. Purdue finished the set on a 6-1 run, including two kills each by Atkinson and Stahl.
A midset rally by the Terrapins helped Maryland turn a 12-8 deficit into a 25-22 Set 4 win to extend the match to a decisive fifth set. The Terps outhit Purdue .214 to .111 in the stanza. Cuttino was the lone bright spot, putting down five kills. The Boilermakers jumped out to a 4-1 lead and went on to lead 12-8, but Maryland scored six straight to go up 14-12. Down 19-16, Purdue got kills from Atkinson and Stahl and a stuff by Atkinson and Adelaja to tie it up at 19. The Terrapins went up 24-21. A service error kept the set going, but a net violation gave it to Maryland.
The Boilermakers (18-12, 8-11 B1G) wrap up the regular season at 7 p.m. ET Friday against Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio.
