WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.-- For the second time in Purdue head wrestling coach Tony Ersland's tenure, the Boilermakers will travel west to compete in California. Purdue will take on a pair of Pac-12 Conference opponents in Boise State and Stanford on the Cardinal's home mat inside Burnham Pavilion in Palo Alto. The doubleheader starts at 8 p.m. ET against the Broncos with Stanford to follow at 9:30 p.m.
The last time two Pac-12 opponents were on the Boilermakers' schedule was 2005-06 when they faced four from the conference in CSU Fullerton, Boise State, Cal Poly and CSU Bakersfield.
"This trip will be beneficial to us in so many areas," Purdue assistant wrestling coach Kendric Maple said. "First of all, we get to see different competition by getting outside of the Big Ten, secondly, we are going to new places. That's part of the beauty of collegiate wrestling, going from coast to coast. It's great for these young me to expand their horizons."
It has been nearly 11 years since Purdue has faced Boise State, the largest gap among all of its opponents in 2016-17.
"Heading out west we will see some different styles of wrestling compared to the Big Ten," Maple said. "With the strategy of our guys, coming from the Big Ten, the best conference there is for wrestling, and Purdue, they will be on the attack and aggressive. If we wrestle to our style by putting up points, we will have success."
They will then trek to Fresno and for CSU Bakersfield's Roadrunner Open. Competition from Clovis North High School is set to get underway Sunday at 1 p.m. Competition will take place on 8 to 10 mats and they will wrestle to sixth place. Eleven teams are listed to compete: Army, Boise State, Cal Poly, CSU Bakersfield, Oregon State, Purdue and Stanford; NCAA Division II teams: California Baptist and San Francisco State; and Menlo (NAIA).
"It's very important for our guys to experience tournaments like the Roadrunner Open for the different competition, but also developing them as wrestlers, getting them to put five matches together because that's what it takes to win a title in March," Maple said. "Duals don't simulate what the NCAA Championships are like. We'll be going through the grind of beating one guy and moving on to the next."
In 2014 Purdue wrestled in the tournament, placing 11, with Danny Sabatello bringing home the 133-pound title. Kyle Ayersman, Alex Griffin and Tyler Kral also placed. Griffin was fourth at 149 pounds, Ayersman fifth at 133 and Kral sixth at 285.

#BoilerNotes
- Tyler Kral is off to the best start of his career at 7-1 ... with two more wins he will match his season total and career best of nine from 2015-16 ... four of his seven wins have been shutouts, which is tops on the team.
- Five of Alex Griffin's six wins this season are by tech fall, which is a career high ... two have been shutouts ... through eight matches Griffin has outscored the competition 94-13 ... he had three straight tech falls at the Eastern Michigan Open ... the last time a Boilermaker had won three or more consecutive matches by technical fall was Dec. 20, 2009, when Logan Brown strung together four.
- Luke Welch has exploded to start the season, averaging 4.3 takedowns and nearly 11 points per match ... he's the team leader in takedowns with 30 and is only 16 shy of his career best 46 from last season.
- When Blake Reid pinned Chris Droege of Lake Erie in 25 seconds at the Eastern Michigan Open, he registered the fastest fall for a Boilermaker since Braden Atwood's 21-second pin of SIU Edwardsville's Chris Johnson on Nov. 24, 2013 ... it was also the first pin of Reid's career.
