WINDERMERE, Fla. - The Purdue men's golf team posted a strong performance in round one and shares the lead with Florida after 18 holes at the elite Tavistock Collegiate Invitational.
The Boilermakers shot a 5-under par 283 to share the 18-hole lead with No. 7-ranked Florida and three shots clear of North Florida and No. 3-ranked Vanderbilt at 2-under par. Arizona State and Augusta are tied for fifth at even-par.
The Tavistock Collegiate Invitational is considered the premier fall event in collegiate golf. Four of the nation's top-seven and 10 of the nation's top-45 teams are in the field. Every team in the field is ranked in the nation's top 100. Played at the prestigious Isleworth Golf and Country Club, the course is home to Tiger Woods and plays to par-72 and over 7,500 yards.
Purdue played outstanding golf all day and outside of the counting team playing the par-5 3rd hole in a combined 4-over par, was near the top of the leaderboard all day.
Sophomore Timmy Hildebrand and senior Austin Eoff led a consistent Purdue lineup in round one with four players in the top 18. Hildebrand and Eoff are each tied for sixth at 2-under par 70.
Hildebrand was fourth in the field with five birdies and was under-par for his whole round. He birdied his second and fifth holes of the day to get to 2-under par. Hildebrand made the turn at 2-under par and quickly got to 3-under par with a birdie on the par-3 2nd hole. Hildebrand bogeyed Nos. 3 and 4, but then birdied the par-5 7th hole to get back to 2-under par.
Eoff also birdied his second hole of the day and then eagled No. 13 to move to 3-under par after four holes. After bogeying his eighth and 12th holes to fall to 1-under par, he also birdied the par-5 7th hole to improve to 2-under par and finish round one tied for sixth.
Fernando Barco is tied for ninth after 18 holes at 1-under par after a consistent round that featured 15 pars, two birdies and a bogey. Barco birdied No. 7 and 13, and bogeyed the par-3 2nd hole.
Brian Carlson is tied for 18th at even-par after posting five birdies on the day. He was even-par after 11 holes before a double-bogey on his 12th hole of the day dropped him to 2-over par. He was still 2-over par after 15 holes, before finishing birdie-birdie-par to move to even-par and into the top 20 after 18 holes.
Jarle Volden is tied for 71st after shooting an 8-over par 80.
Purdue will tee off round two at Isleworth on Monday at 9:40 a.m. ET and be paired with Florida and North Florida.
