OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. -- The Purdue men's golf team struggled on Day 2 of the Fighting Illini Invitational, slipping to an 11th-place tie after 36 holes at Olympia Fields Country Club.
The Boilermakers shot an 18-over par 298 to finish their first 36 holes in 29-over par 589 (291-298) and tied for 11th place with Baylor. Tournament host Illinois (-6) leads Texas A&M by 21 shots (-15) while Oklahoma State (+17) rounds out the top three.
The Boilermakers are just five shots out of sixth place, held by USC (+24) as nine teams are within seven shots of the sixth-placed Trojans.
Of the 15 teams in the field, eight advanced to last year's NCAA Championships, while 12 of the squads were ranked in the top 32 of last year's Golfweek rankings. The event is being played at the prestigious Olympia Fields Country Club just outside Chicago. The course has hosted numerous USGA events, PGA Championships and the elite Western Open several times.
Purdue once again struggled to make birdies, recording just eight on the day and now ranking 13th in the field in birdies made (15).
Leading Purdue in the second round was senior Austin Eoff with a 1-over par 71 to now sit tied for 21st at 5-over par 145 (74-71). Eoff was 1-under par through 13 holes but bogeyed two of his last five holes to move over par for his round.
Brian Carlson and Fernando Barco are tied for 30th at 7-over par 147. Carlson shot a 5-over par 75 today, registering no birdies, 13 pars and five bogeys on his round. Barco shot a 6-over par 76, playing his last nine holes in 5-over par.
Timmy Hildebrand is tied for 56th at 12-over par after posting his second straight 76. Hildebrand was 5-over par through seven holes, but played his last 11 holes in just 1-over par.
Jarle Volden is tied for 68th at 15-over par 155 after shooting an 11-over par 81 today.
Purdue will tee off the final round at 9:45 a.m. ET off hole No. 10 and will be paired with Indiana and Baylor.
