ZIONSVILLE, Ind. -- The Purdue men's golf team struggled late in the round and finished second at the weather-shortened Wolf Run Intercollegiate that concluded today at Wolf Run Golf Club.
The Boilermakers shot a 13-over par 297 today for a 36-hole total of 6-over par 574 (277-297) to finish 13 shots behind No. 3-ranked Illinois. The Illini shot an 11-under par 273 today to overcome an 11-stroke deficit entering today's final round. Kentucky finished third at 7-over par 575 (288-287).
The tournament was originally scheduled to be 54 holes with the teams playing 36 holes Saturday. However, heavy rains on Friday night and Saturday morning shortened the tournament to a 36-hole event.
Leading the Boilermakers was junior Brian Carlson, who finished third at 2-under par 140 (68-72). Carlson was 2-over par today through nine holes, but played the back nine in 1-under par to finish just two shots out of medalist honors.
It was Carlson's fifth career top-three finish.
Senior Austin Eoff finished tied for 14th at 3-over par 145 (70-75). Eoff was 1-over par through 13 holes today, but played his last five holes in 3-over par to fall out of the top 10. However, Eoff's placing was his 22nd career top-20 finish in his 39th career event.
Sophomore Timmy Hildebrand recorded his first career top-20 finish with a T-18th showing after a 36-hole total of 4-over par 146 (70-76). Hildebrand overcame a shaky front nine today (+5) to play the back nine in even-par to record a counting score in both rounds.
Sophomore Jarle Volden placed tied for 23rd at 5-over par 147 (69-78). Volden was even-par through 11 holes today, but suffered back-to-back double-bogeys on hole Nos. 14 and 15 to fall out of the top 20.
Fernando Barco finished tied for 29th at 7-over par 149 (75-74). Barco bogeyed the first three holes on Sunday, but played his final 15 holes in even par to finish in the top 30.
Individually, Chad Phillips placed tied for 49th at 12-over par 154 (77-77).
Purdue will head to Olympia Fields CC next weekend for the loaded OFCC / Fighting Illini Intercollegiate. The field is regularly one of the strongest in collegiate golf.
