STANFORD, Calif. -- Junior Danielle Cuttino put down a match-high 21 kills, including the 500th of her career, on a team-best .447 hitting effort as the Boilermakers wrapped their stay at the Stanford Invitational with a 3-1 win over Cal Poly on Saturday. Purdue won the match 27-25, 25-21, 14-25, 25-21 to move to 7-1 on the season.
Redshirt senior Faye Adelaja added 14 kills and a match-best seven blocks, while redshirt sophomore Sherridan Atkinson chipped in a season-high 12 kills and three stuffs. Junior Azariah Stahl put down nine kills to go with 12 digs, three blocks and an ace.
Defensively, freshman Natalie Haben managed 13 digs followed by Stahl (12), redshirt junior Ashley Evans (9), sophomore Brooke Peters (8) and redshirt sophomore Carissa Damler (7).
The Boilermakers won every major statistical category except aces, outhitting Cal Poly .263 to .236 and outblocking the Mustangs 11-8.
The Boilermakers fell behind 13-9 in Set 1 and later trailed 21-19, but pulled out a 27-25 win on their second set-point attempt. Down 21-19, Purdue scored five of the next seven to go up 24-23 after a kill and a block by Adelaja. Cal Poly called timeout and scored two in a row to earn their own set-point opportunity at 25-24. The Boilermakers took a break of their own and came out with three straight, capped by a Haben ace, to steal away the set. Atkinson, a Long Beach, California, native, put down six kills to lead the Boilermaker effort, while Adelaja recorded three stuffs.
Danielle Cuttino put down seven kills and the Boilermakers outhit Cal Poly .387 to .200 in a 25-21 Set 2 win. Purdue jumped ahead 12-5 as Cuttino pounded down four kills and added a solo block. Cal Poly cut the margin to two at 12-10, but the Boilermakers boosted the advantage back to five at 18-13. The Mustangs pulled within one at 20-19, but the Boilermakers wrapped up the stanza on a 5-2 run. A kill and a stuff by Atkinson wrapped up the set.
Cal Poly led Set 3 from start to finish, outhitting Purdue .433 to .062 and putting up four blocks and three aces in a 25-14 win. The Mustangs jumped out to a 17-7 lead and never looked back. Adelaja's four kills were not enough to buoy the Boilermaker comeback.
The Boilermakers closed out the night with a 25-21 win in Set 4. Cal Poly led 11-6 midway through, but the Boilermakers rallied to take a 13-12 lead as Cuttino put down two kills and Stahl added an ace. The teams traded points, tying six times, last at 18, before Purdue surged ahead, 22-18. Kills from Adelaja and Cuttino gave the Boilermakers their first match-point chance at 24-20 and another by Cuttino, her seventh of the set and 21st of the night, sealed things at 25-21 two serves later.
The No. 20 Boilermakers (7-1) return home to face Southeastern Louisiana at 10 a.m. Friday on Belin Court. Xavier and Kansas round out the tournament field for the inaugural Stacey Clark Classic.
