WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- A fourth straight shutout was thrown at Alexander Field on Saturday as Cal State Northridge lefty Kenny Rosenberg struck out 12 in a complete-game effort to lead his team past Purdue baseball 6-0 in game three of the series.
Rosenberg (6-1) retired the final 16 batters he faced, racking up seven of his 12 Ks during that stretch. The sophomore has 113 strikeouts in 92 innings pitched this season.
The Boilermakers' streak of 24 consecutive scoreless innings pitched ended when CSUN (32-19) plated three runs in the fourth inning, recording its first runs of the series. However, the top of the fourth turned out to be the only frame in which starter Shane Bryant (0-6) allowed runs, as the senior posted his third consecutive quality start. He capped his outing with back-to-back strikeouts in the seventh inning, finishing his final collegiate start with six Ks total. He worked three 1-2-3 frames over his seven innings of five-hit ball.
Jacson McGowan recorded both of Purdue's hits, doubling to left center in the bottom of the second and singling two innings later. Kyle Wood and Harry Shipley also reached base safely twice (via a hit by pitch and walk) over their first two plate appearances. Wood and Shipley continue to be atop the Big Ten Conference with 17 hit by pitch apiece and should finish the regular season as the league leaders.
But after going 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position while stranding seven runners on base over the first four innings against Rosenberg, the Boilermakers (9-44) did not get another scoring opportunity vs. the dynamic southpaw.
Purdue players undoubtedly played with heavy hearts after learning Saturday morning that 18th-year head coach Doug Schreiber would be stepping down after the season finale Sunday.
Starting pitchers have allowed just three earned runs over a combined 44 1/3 innings pitched in the series. There have been only four extra-base hits total over the first three games. The Matadors finally recorded their first extra-base hit of the series in the ninth inning Saturday.
CSUN strung together eight of its 12 hits Saturday in two innings. The Matadors scored three times on three singles, an error and sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. In the top of the eighth with the bases loaded, Jayson Newman's two-out single behind the second base bag plated two runs as Rayne Raven kept running on the play after Purdue couldn't record the inning-ending force out at second in time.
Sunday's series finale is set for noon. The Boilermakers' 13 seniors will be recognized before the game for their contributions to the program.
