ANN ARBOR, Mich. ââ'¬" Purdue's Gergely Madarasz knocked off yet another ranked opponent, but it wasn't enough as the Boilermakers fell to No. 20 Michigan 4-1 at the Varsity Tennis Center on Sunday. The 53rd-ranked Boilermakers wrapped up their two-match weekend with their record moving to 13-6, while slipping to 2-3 in Big Ten play.
The Wolverines (15-4, 4-1 B1G) received victories at Nos. 2 and 3 to earn the doubles point. First it was Jathan Malik and Kevin Wong with a 6-3 decision over Purdue's Madarasz and Benjamin Ugarte. The point was clinched with a 6-4 outing from Michigan's Myles Schalet and Lubomir Cuba against Mateus Silva and Renan Hanayama.
The first two singles matches went the Wolverines' way to build a 3-0 lead. At the bottom of the lineup, Schalet and Davis Crocker turned in matching scores of 6-0, 6-1 to defeat Lucas Dages and Mateus Silva, respectively.
Madarasz secured the Boilermakers' only point in the dual match as the 51st-ranked redshirt sophomore disposed of No. 75 Malik in straight sets 6-4, 7-5. The win, his fourth of the season over a ranked opponent, lifted his record to 15-4.
Any momentum Purdue gained from Madarasz's victory was halted by Runhao Hua's 6-2 win in the third set over Dominik Sochurek. The Wolverine took the opening set 6-3 and Sochurek forced the decisive set at No. 4 by taking the second set 6-4.
The Boilermakers will be back at home at the Schwartz Tennis Center for a weekend twinbill, playing host to Penn State at 6 p.m. ET on Friday and Ohio State at noon on Sunday.
