COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland scored five times while sending nine men to the plate on two different occasions, riding the big innings to a rubber game victory vs. Purdue baseball 11-3 Sunday afternoon.
The Terrapins (21-18, 7-5 B1G) scored five in the third and seventh innings. They were 6-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left only two runners on base in the game. The Boilermakers (7-30, 2-13 B1G) had a 7-4 edge in hit column through six innings, but trailed 6-2.
Brett Carlson doubled in each of his first three at-bats, becoming the first Boilermaker with three doubles in a game since May 2011. He has nine extra-base hits and a .875 slugging percentage in the last nine games.
Maryland had four consecutive batters reach base safely during both the third- and seventh-inning rallies. Purdue committed four errors on the day, all coming in extended frames and leading to five unearned runs. Nick Dunn delivered a two-run double for the big hit of the bottom of the third and Marty Costes' two-run single capped the scoring in the seventh.

Maryland starter Hunter Parsons (2-0) did not issue a walk over six innings of two-run ball in his first career Big Ten start. He retired at least the first two batters of each of the first five innings.
A leadoff walk to pinch hitter Justin Gubser, wild pitch and RBI double from Harry Shipley gave Purdue hope in the top of the seventh. With the score at 6-3 and the potential tying run on deck, the Terps' Robert Galligan responded by striking out Kyle Johnson and Kyle Wood to squash the chance at a big inning. Maryland relievers retired the final nine Purdue hitters of the game in order after Shipley's double.
Doubles from James Jewell and Carlson produced a run in the top of the sixth. Jewell hit safely in all three games of the series, finishing the weekend 5-for-11 with three extra-base hits while also throwing out three base stealers. Alec Olund singled home Carlson with a two-out single in the second inning.
Tanner Andrews entered the with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the third after UMD had ignited the rally with two singles and two walks while Shane Bryant (0-3) was on the mound. Andrews struck out the first batter he faced but couldn't limit the damage after the two-run double and error kept the rally alive. He went on to retire eight straight batters from the fourth though seventh innings, working back-to-back 1-2-3 frames in the process. But the Terps extended their lead with a solo home run from Anthony Papio to begin the fourth inning.
Johnson extended his reached base safely streak to 13 consecutive games with a two-out single in the third inning.
The Boilermakers return to action Tuesday for a 7 p.m. ET game at Illinois State.
