COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Purdue baseball did not have a runner advance past first base while being shut out by All-American right-hander Mike Shawaryn in Maryland's 6-0 win Saturday afternoon.
The Boilermakers (7-29, 2-12 B1G) turned a season-high three double plays, but were shut out for the fourth time this year.
Shawaryn (3-3) struck out 10 in a shutout of Purdue for the second year in a row. With two singles and a walk, Kyle Wood reached base safely in all three of his plate appearances against the Terrapins' ace. But the Boilermakers had only one additional base runner in the eight innings that Shawaryn was on the mound. He worked four 1-2-3 frames, retiring eight consecutive batters between Wood's singles in the fourth and sixth innings as well as the final seven batters he faced.
Alec Olund made two nice catches in right field. His diving grab took away a leadoff single from Nick Cieri in the bottom of the second. With runners on second and third in the sixth inning, Olund made a leaping catch at the side wall in foul territory for the final out of the frame.
Matt Frawley was fairly efficient with his pitches and made it through seven innings of four-run ball. He gave up a solo homer off the left field foul pole to Marty Costes in the bottom of the second, three consecutive two-out singles an inning later and two more runs after issuing a leadoff walk in the fifth.
With Gavin Downs going eight innings Friday in Purdue's series-opening win, it marked the first time this season that the team's starting pitchers have both worked at least six innings in consecutive games.
Frawley (1-4) escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the bottom of the sixth, inducing and starting a 1-2-3 double play for the first two outs of the frame. Purdue also turned an unconventional 7-4 double play in the fourth inning when Costes didn't retouch second base after sliding in head first on a hit-and-run fly out to left field.
Wood has reached base safely in seven of his nine plate appearances in the series. James Jewell singled in his first at-bat Saturday for his fourth hit of the series. He was the only Boilermaker besides Wood not to strike out against Shawaryn. Kyle Johnson's leadoff single in the ninth inning extended his reached base safely streak to 12 consecutive games.
Maryland (20-18, 6-5 B1G) is scheduled to start freshman right-hander Hunter Parsons for Sunday's 1 p.m. rubber game. Shane Bryant goes for Purdue.
