- Purdue captured its ninth win on the Basham Courts of the Schwartz Tennis Center … the Boilermakers have played all 13 of their home matches indoors.
- No. 44 Gergely Madarasz defeated his seventh Big Ten opponent … six of his seven wins have been in straight sets … this spring Madarasz leads the team in singles wins at 18.
- Ricky Medinilla logged his 23rd singles win … the junior's 23 total wins are the most on the team … he also matches a career high of wins in a season.
- The Boilermakers dropped the doubles point, but came back for the win … it is the third time this season they have lost the point, but won the dual match.
- The dual match victory was the 85th for seven-year head coach Pawel Gajdzik.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ââ'¬" Minnesota jumped out to the early lead, but the No. 59 Purdue men's tennis team rebounded in singles play to take a 4-2 decision Friday on the Basham Courts of the Schwartz Tennis Center. The Boilermakers (15-9, 4-6 B1G) went the distance, winning three of their four singles matches in the third set.
The Gophers jumped out in doubles play to claim the point. No. 25 Felix Corwin and Matic Spec beat Purdue's duo of Dominik Sochurek and Benjamin Ugarte 6-3 at the top of the lineup. At No. 3, Justyn Levin and Jeremy Lynn topped Mateus Silva and Renan Hanayama 6-3.
Singles competition was balanced between the two teams early on with the Boilermakers and Minnesota splitting the first sets. The Gophers struck first with Ruben Weber upsetting 84th-ranked Ugarte 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot.
No. 44 Gergely Madarasz registered his sixth straight-setter over a conference opponent, making easy work of Spec (6-2, 6-4) at the No. 1 position. The win pushed his record to 18-3 and got Purdue on the board, setting the stage for the comeback.
The remaining matches went into third sets as neither team refused to back down. After dropping the first set 6-4, Sochurek overcame Levin 7-6, 6-2 at No. 5.
To break the 2-2 team score, Silva came back to win against Marino Alpeza 6-2, 6-3 after losing the first set 7-5 at the No. 4 spot. At No. 3 Medinilla disposed of Corwin 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4) to clinch the match for the Boilermakers.
Purdue takes on No. 53 Wisconsin at 10 a.m. ET on Sunday at the Schwartz Tennis Center to close out the regular season. Weather permitting, the match will be played outside.
