WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue baseball jumped out to an early four-run lead, but Indiana State scored the final 22 runs of the game to roar past the Boilermakers 22-4 Wednesday evening in the finale of a six-game homestand at Alexander Field.
Brett Carlson hit a two-run homer to open the scoring in the second inning, going deep for the second time in the last three games. But Purdue (6-28) had just two hits after the third inning.
The Sycamores (24-13) already led 10-4 when they scored 12 times in the eighth inning to account for the lopsided final score. A pair of dropped fly balls in the rainy inning allowed five additional unearned runs to score after the Boilermakers recorded the second out. The 22 runs were the most allowed by Purdue since suffering a 23-3 loss at Rice in February 2014.
Tony Rosselli had four hits and eight RBI for Indiana State, driving in a run in five different plate appearances. He hit a two-run homer and had a pair of two-out, two-run singles. Hunter Owen scored four times despite recording just one hit.
Both teams used nine pitchers in the game. Jacob Preston worked three scoreless innings as the starter in his collegiate debut for the Boilermakers, retiring eight consecutive batters after giving up a game-opening double. But a pair of walks and a single loaded the bases with one out for ISU in the fourth inning, and all three runners came around to score after the freshman left the mound. The Sycamores put up a four spot to tie the game. Dane Giesler followed Rosselli's two-run single with a game-tying, two-run double.

Indiana State used a different pitcher in every inning. Tyler Whitbread (2-1) got out of a bases-loaded jam in the third inning and worked a 1-2-3 fourth to help change the momentum in favor of the visitors.
Kyle Johnson singled and doubled in his first two at-bats, extending a stretch in which he reached base safely 12 times in 16 plate appearances dating back to Saturday. His RBI double in the top of the third made it 3-0 and he later scored on a bases-loaded walk to Carlson.
After Preston left the mound, Brian Ghiselli and Harry Shipley were the only Purdue pitchers that were able to put up a zero. Ghiselli worked the sixth inning and Shipley the ninth. Shipley has started every game (88 straight) at shortstop dating back to the start of last season. Not only was it his first collegiate appearance on the mound, but it also marked the first time he's played any position but shortstop for the Boilermakers.
Patrick Kenney made his first appearance on the mound since 2014 after redshirting last season due to shoulder surgery. He started the seventh inning but was only able to retire one of the four batters he faced.
Tuesday in a 9-2 win vs. Ball State, it was Purdue that scored eight unanswered runs. Coincidentally, in ISU's 4-1 win two weeks ago in Terre Haute in the first meeting of the year, the Sycamores scored all four of their runs over the first four innings.
Carlson finished the homestand 11-for-22 with six extra-base hits. Alec Olund doubled Wednesday to finish the homestand 10-for-20 with no strikeouts in 25 plate appearances.
The Boilermakers return to action Friday when they visit College Park, Maryland, for the first time. First pitch with the Terrapins is set 6:30 p.m.
