EAST LANSING, Mich. ââ'¬" No. 53 Purdue soared past Michigan State 4-0 in Big Ten Conference men's tennis action at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility on Saturday. The Boilermakers (13-5, 2-2 B1G) dealt the Spartans (10-11, 0-4 B1G) their fourth shutout out of their last five losses and picked up their fourth win of the season on the road.
Doubles action was nerve-racking for Purdue. Michigan State took the lead at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots early, the only match that was in Purdue's favor was at the top of the lineup.
Jasper Koenen and Billy Shisler gained the advantage for Michigan State by defeating Benjamin Ugarte and Renan Hanayama 6-4 in the No. 2 spot. The chase for the doubles point was evened when Purdue's top tandem of Dominik Sochurek and Ricky Medinilla beat Mac Roy and Michael Dube 6-3.
Playing together for just the second time this spring, Gergely Madarasz and Lucas Dages edged Alexander Kim and Ivan Rakic 7-6 to earn the doubles point for the Boilermakers.
Purdue surrendered no more than two games in five of the six singles sets contested. Medinilla (11-4) was first to finish, winning 6-1, 6-2 against Koenen in the middle of the lineup. Shortly after, Mateus Silva (9-4) used a 6-2 first set and a bagel in the second vs. Shisler to put the Boilermakers on the verge of clinching the match.
Madarasz battled through the opening set with Roy for a 7-5 decision. The 51st-ranked redshirt sophomore cruised in the second set 6-2 to pick up his 14th win at the top of the lineup and seal the deal for Purdue. Matches at Nos. 2, 4 and 6 were abandoned upon Madarasz's victory.
The Boilermakers are back in action at No. 20 Michigan on Sunday. First serves from the Varsity Tennis Center are set for noon ET.
