WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Eddie De LaRiva worked a career-high seven innings of scoreless relief and Purdue baseball scored eight unanswered runs to defeat Ball State 9-2 Tuesday evening at Alexander Field.
Three different Boilermakers drove in multiple runs. Nick Dalesandro and Harry Shipley both had a two-run double. Justin Gubser picked up an RBI in each of his first three plate-appearances. Purdue drew 12 free passes (nine walks, 3 HBP) and has compiled .451 team on-base percentage over the last three games thanks in part to 29 free passes (23 walks, 6 HBP).
De LaRiva entered the game with the bases loaded and no outs in the second inning. He allowed a pair of inherited runners to score, but prevented the Cardinals (23-15) from posting a big inning. And while Ball State's seven pitchers combined to issue at least one free pass in six of the eight innings in which Purdue (6-27) came to the plate, De LaRiva did not walk or hit a batter during his extended outing.
Kyle Johnson scored from first base on Gubser's single to right center field in the first inning after being in motion on a 1-0 pitch. Johnson drew three walks for the second time in the last three games. He has reached base safely in 10 of his last 14 plate appearances dating back to the fourth inning Saturday.

Shipley reached base safely four times Tuesday, scoring the game-tying run in the bottom of the third as Gubser was safe at first to stay out of a potential inning-ending 6-4-3 double play with the bases loaded. Dalesandro followed with a blooper down the right field line that landed fair by only a few feet and went for a two-run double.
The Boilermakers would load the bases again in the fourth and seventh innings, scoring twice in both frames to eventually blow the game open. Seven of Purdue's nine players in the original starting lineup reached base safely at least twice in the win.
De LaRiva worked three 1-2-3 innings, retiring seven consecutive batters from the second through fourth innings and eight in a row from fifth through seventh. All six hits he allowed were singles. He joined Matt Frawley (twice) and Tanner Andrews (April 2 at Penn State) as Boilermakers to work at least seven innings in a relief outing this season. De LaRiva's longest collegiate outing entering the night was the 4 1/3 innings he worked against Nebraska in the March 25 Big Ten opener.
Brian Ghiselli struck out a pair in a 1-2-3 ninth inning to finish off the win and post a seventh consecutive zero for the Purdue bullpen.
Kyle Wood (twice) and Harry Shipley were both hit by a pitch Tuesday, Wood picking up an RBI when he was plunked on the knee with the bases loaded in the fourth inning. Both Boilermakers have been hit by a pitch three times over the last three games. Shipley now leads the Big Ten with 10 HBP.
Purdue closes out its season-long six-game homestand Wednesday against Indiana State. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
