WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ââ'¬"- The No. 33-ranked Purdue men's golf team pieced together two consistent rounds and finds itself comfortably in second place after 36 holes at the Boilermaker Invitational.

The first two rounds played at the Kampen Course on Saturday were played under brilliant, sun-splashed skies with light winds, which allowed teams a great chance to post low scores.

The Boilermakers obliged by firing rounds of 284-286 for a 6-under par 570. Purdue trails only No. 2-ranked Illinois, which recorded rounds of 280-277 for a 19-under par 557. Michigan State and Northwestern are tied for third at 4-over par 580.

Three Boilermakers are in the field's top 20, led by senior Stuart Macdonald. The Vancouver native is tied for second at 5-under par 139 after rounds of 69-70. Macdonald recorded birdies, seven of which came on the front nine, during the day to offset four bogeys. After opening his day with a bogey on the third hole, Macdonald recorded four birdies in the next five holes to position himself for a shot at his first career title.

Sophomore Brian Carlson is tied for fifth at 3-under par 141 (70-71). Carlson, like Macdonald, avoided big numbers and recorded eight birdies against five bogeys during his round for his 15th round (out of 28) under par this year. Carlson is in position for his fifth top-five finish of the season.

Austin Eoff is tied for 18th at 1-over par 145 (73-72). Eoff was forced to scramble all day making just four birdies on the day. His second round featured 16 pars, one birdie and one bogey. He ended the day making par on his last 12 holes.

Fernando Barco is tied for 22nd at 2-over par 146 after rounds of 72-74. Barco opened the first round with birdies on three of his first four holes, but four bogeys in his next six holes set him back before finishing his first round at even-par.

Freshman Jarle Volden also had a solid day, finishing 36 holes in a 29th-place tie at 3-over par 147 (74-73). Volden actually ranks fourth in the field in birdies with nine, but had two double-bogeys and a triple-bogey that brought him back to the pack.

Individually, Timmy Hildebrand is tied for 63rd at 9-over par 153 (75-78), while Chad Phillips is tied for 70th at 11-over par 155 (76-79).

The Boilermakers will be paired with Illinois and Michigan State on Sunday and will tee off hole No. 1, beginning at 10 a.m. ET on the Kampen Course. Admission is free.
