- Purdue improved to 5-4 in road dual matches, two of the wins have been in Big Ten play.
- The Boilermakers put their 11th different doubles team out in spring action … they won the doubles point for a 10th time this season and remained undefeated when doing so at 10-0 … it was the third Big Ten match in which Purdue won the doubles point.
IOWA CITY, Iowa ââ'¬" Playing in its first outdoor match of the season, No. 59 Purdue topped No. 67 Iowa 4-1 on Friday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center. The Boilermakers (14-8, 3-5 B1G) captured the doubles point and won three singles matches to knock off their third ranked opponent of the season. The loss brought the Hawkeyes' record to 10-13 and 1-7 in league play.
In doubles play, Purdue's pair of Mateus Silva and Renan Hanayama beat Dominic Patrick and Jake Jacoby 6-3 at the bottom of the lineup for the early advantage.
Benjamin Ugarte and Dominik Sochurek sealed the deal as they teamed together for the first time this season in the No. 1 spot. The pair defeated Iowa's duo of Lefteris Theodorou and Josh Silverstein 6-4.
Singles action was back and forth as the Boilermakers split half of the first sets with Iowa. Ricky Medinilla was the first to finish at No. 3, beating the Hawkeyes' Robin Haden 6-2, 6-2. The junior improved to 12-5 in spring play and a team-high 22-9 overall with the win.
Iowa made its only mark on the board from a 6-4, 6-3 showing by Jonas Larsen over Silva at No. 4. Dominik Sochurek gave Purdue a 3-1 lead by way of a 6-4, 7-5 win over Patrick at No. 5.
At the top of the lineup, No. 42 Gergely Madarasz dropped his first set 6-2 against Theodorou, but was able to climb back 7-5, 6-4 to earn Purdue its fourth and final point to claim the match. Madarasz (17-2) extended his winning streak to six straight as he remained unscathed in conference play at 6-0.
The Boilermakers take on Nebraska at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday in Lincoln at the Dillon Tennis Center to finish off the weekend and regular season road action.
