URBANA, Ill. ââ'¬" The Purdue women's tennis team dropped their second consecutive Big Ten match, a 5-2 setback to No. 50 Illinois (12-6, 7-1 B1G) on Sunday at the Atkins Tennis Center. Krisztina Kapitany and Natalia Davila came away as the lone victors on the day for the Boilermakers.
In doubles action, the Fighting Illini proved to be too much for Purdue as they claimed the early point. The No. 3 team of Jaclyn Switkes and Daniela Pedraza defeated Claudia Escribens and Natalia Davila 6-2.
Illinois would go on to clinch the point in a battle of ranked teams at No. 1. Louise Kwong and Ines Vias, who are ranked 43rd nationally, topped Purdue's No. 60 tandem of Andjela Djokovic and Nicole Robinson 6-4.
The first four matches in singles were split. The Illini collected wins at the Nos. 1 and 3 spots, while the Boilermakers posted victories at the Nos. 2 and 4 positions from Kapitany and Davila, respectively. Kapitany disposed of Vias 6-4, 6-1 to push her senior campaign mark to 13-6. A third set was needed in Davila's match against Jerricka Boone after the two exchanged 6-1, 6-2 first and second sets. Davila repeated her opening set score to take the match.
After falling in her first set 6-0 to Switkes, Purdue's Marta Ruedas-Burgos battled back to win the second set 6-4. Illinois clinched the match after Switkes bested Ruedas Burgos 6-3 in the final stanza.
Purdue returns to the Schwartz Tennis Center for the first time since March 5 to play host to Minnesota on Friday. The match is scheduled for a 3 p.m. ET start.
