COLUMBUS, Ind. ââ'¬"- The No. 33-ranked Purdue men's golf team recorded the third-best round of the day and tied with Miami, Ohio, at 2-over par 578 to win the weather-shortened Hoosier Collegiate at Otter Creek Golf Course.
The Boilermakers then took home the hardware, defeating the RedHawks on the second playoff hole to win their third team title of the year.
"I'm really proud of the guys for gutting out a win this week. They battled through some really tough conditions and played a lot of smart golf. It was good to respond in the pressure of a playoff the way we did, which could serve beneficial down the road," said head coach Rob Bradley. "We have to get back to work this week and finish our season strong next weekend at home. I really think this was a good learning experience heading into next weekend and then the Big Ten Championships in two weeks."
The tournament was shortened to 36 holes after chilly temperatures and strong Northern winds cut Saturday's play from 36 to 18 holes. Today's action consisted of just 18 holes.
Junior Fernando Barco led the Boilermakers finishing in a tie for second at 3-under par 141 (72-69). Barco recorded three straight birdies on Nos. 12 ââ'¬" 14 to surge into a tie for first, but a bogey on No. 16 dropped him one shot off the pace. Nevertheless, his runner-up showing was the best of his career.
Sophomore Brian Carlson continued his impressive season with a T-10th finish at 1-over par 145 (71-74). Carlson was 1-under par through six holes, before a double bogey-bogey stretch dropped him off the pace. He climbed back to even-par for his round, but a double-bogey on the par-3 15th hole moved him over par for the tournament. It marked his fifth top-10 finish of the season for Carlson, tied for the 10th most in a season in school history.
Junior Austin Eoff and freshman Jarle Volden tied for 18th at 3-over par 147, both recording identical rounds of 75-72. Both players had 14 pars, two birdies and two bogeys today. Volden's finish was a career-best showing.
