WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue men's tennis team began its Big Ten Conference schedule with a dominating 4-1 win over in-state rival Indiana while playing on the Basham Courts at the Schwartz Tennis Center on Tuesday. It was the Boilermakers' first win in the series since 2014 as they moved to 11-2, while dealing the Hoosiers their seventh straight loss.
Doubles action was a back and forth battle between Purdue and the Hoosiers. First to finish was the No. 2 Boilermaker duo of Dominik Sochurek and Ricky Medinilla, taking down Indiana's Chris Essick and Stefan Lugonjic 6-3.
Not shortly thereafter, Mateus Silva and Renan Hanayama clinched the point for the Boilermakers by beating Raheel Manji and Afonso Salgado 6-3. The pair kept a steady lead at the No. 3 spot in Hanayama's first appearance in doubles action this spring as well as their first time playing together this season.
The Hoosiers trailed closely behind during singles play, but Purdue was able to out run them. Silva led the pack defeating Salgado 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot, giving the Boilermakers a 2-0 edge. Indiana got on the board with a 6-0, 6-4 outing from Antonio Cembellin over Hanayama at the bottom of the lineup.
It was all Purdue from there out. Immediately following the match at No. 6, Benjamin Ugarte knocked off Manji in straight sets 6-0, 6-4.
In a battle pitting ranked players against each other, Gergely Madarasz stunned the 37th-ranked Hoosier Sam Monette in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. The No. 69 redshirt sophomore's win stands as the highest ranked opponent a Boilermaker has beaten this season. He moved to 11-1 with the upset and ended the dual match.
The Boilermakers hit the road to the west coast to contest No. 14 California on Sunday. The match is set to be played at the Broadway Tennis Center in Burlingame starting at 2:30 p.m. ET.
