ATLANTA -- Purdue's Max Showalter finished 15th among 47 competitors in platform diving on the final day of the NCAA Championships, earning the Boilermakers' their second Honorable Mention All-America award of the meet.

As a freshman, Showalter placed seventh in the consolation final of platform diving to take home Honorable Mention All-America accolades. He took 13th in the prelims to advance to the consolation final.

Friday, classmate Joe Cifelli was also an Honorable Mention All-American in 3-meter diving, an event in which Showalter finished 20th in the prelims. Together the two freshmen accounted for five team points at the national championship meet. The Boilermakers finished tied in 43rd place in the team scoring.

Showalter posted a list score of 368.70 in the prelims and 325.20 in the consolation final, good for average round scores of 61.45 and 54.20, respectively. His second dive of the prelims produced a score of 86.40 on 10-meter, which was his best mark of the day. A 43.50 on his fourth dive of the prelims, his only from the 7 ½-meter platform, realistically took him out of contention of qualifying for the championship final.

Showalter only had one dive earn a score above 60 points in the consolation final, it again coming in the second round (70.40) on 10-meter. A 36.25 on his dive from the 7 ½-meter platform once again caused him to drop on the leaderboard. And while a combined score of 121.80 over the final two rounds of the prelims assured him of a spot in the consolation final, he was only able to produce a combined score of 110.55 on his final two dives of his second list.

The Boilermakers scored at the NCAA Championships for the 21st consecutive season while having a men's diving All-American for the 11th time in the last 12 years. Cifelli and Showalter will headline Purdue's list of returning athletes for the 2016-17 season. Two-time NCAA diving champion Steele Johnson, who exercised an Olympic practice waiver this season, and 2016 Big Ten breaststroke champion Marat Amaltdinov are also expected to return next season. Amaltdinov declined his spot at the NCAA Championships this week in order to train for the Russian Olympic Trials.
