EAST LANSING, Mich. ââ'¬" Purdue's nine-match winning streak over Michigan State came to an end in a 6-1 decision Saturday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The No. 72 Boilermakers suffered their second consecutive setback to move to 8-8 overall while falling to 1-2 in the Big Ten Conference. The Spartans snapped a two-dual match losing skid to push their record to 9-5 and 2-0 in the league.
Michigan State picked up its first win over the Boilermakers since 2009 thanks to a clean sweep in doubles and winning 5 of 6 singles matches. All five of the Spartans' wins were in straight sets except for Purdue's Marta Ruedas-Burgos forcing Athena Trouillot to go the distance in a 0-6, 6-4, 7-5 win for the Michigan State No. 5 player.
Krisztina Kapitany was the only Boilermaker to come away with a victory. The senior registered her team-leading 11th singles win of the spring campaign with a 6-2, 6-1 outing against Lexi Baylis at the No. 3 spot. The win brought Kapitany's spring mark to 11-4 with all but on match played in the middle of the lineup.
Purdue will have a quick turnaround, trekking northwest to Ann Arbor for a Sunday contest against the ninth-ranked Wolverines. First serves are set for noon ET from the Varsity Tennis Center.
