LAKE OCONEE, Ga. ââ'¬"- The 25th-ranked Purdue men's golf team started hot and maintained its strong play through the entire round, leading the highly-competitive Linger Longer Invitational after 18 holes.
The Boilermakers fired an 11-under par 277 to lead the host school, Kennesaw State, by one shot after Sunday's first round. No. 21-ranked Virginia is third at 9-under par 279. No. 12-ranked Alabama and No. 26-ranked Baylor are tied for fourth at 6-under par 282.
The Boilermakers did get as low as 17-under par during the day, but faltered a bit down the stretch, finishing at 11-under par 277.
The 277 is tied for the fifth-best, 18-hole score in school history. Of the 13 rounds in school history of 277 or better, five of them have come this season.
Junior Fernando Barco paced the Boilermakers with a career-best round of 7-under par 65, tied for the fifth-best, 18-hole score in school history. Barco was 5-under par through six holes after eagles on hole Nos. 2 and 6. He got to 8-under par through 13 holes, before bogeying No. 17 to fall back to 7-under par. He is tied for the individual lead with Baylor's Matthew Perrine.
Junior Austin Eoff and freshman Jarle Volden are tied for seventh at 3-under par 69. Both players got to 4-under par during their rounds, before bogeys on the back nine dropped them both to 3-under par. Volden birdied the first three holes he played and was 4-under par through six holes, before playing his final 12 holes in 1-over par. Eoff see-sawed back and forth with birdies and bogeys before settling in with his seventh round in the 60s this year.
Stuart Macdonald is tied for 42nd at 2-over par 74. He was 3-under par through 13 holes before a triple-bogey on No. 14 dropped him back to even par, eventually settling in for a 2-over par 74.
Brian Carlson is tied for 50th at 3-over par 75. Carlson was 1-over par through 16 holes, but bogeyed his final two holes for his opening-round 75.
Round two will tee off tomorrow morning before the final round concludes on Tuesday.
