ATLANTA -- Seniors Mary Beth Dunnichay and Emily Fogle finished on the podium Friday at the NCAA Championships to earn All-America honors for Purdue women's swimming and diving.
Dunnichay placed sixth in the championship final of 3-meter diving, earning her third career All-America honor along with her second podium finish. She scored in both springboard events at NCAAs this week.
Fogle placed eighth in the championship final of the 100 breaststroke, claiming her first podium finish at the national championship meet and fourth career All-America honor. She became the first Purdue swimmer to finish on the podium at NCAAs since Caitlin Hamilton in 2010.
The 2010 NCAA Championships also marked the last time the Boilermakers had a top-eight finisher in at least one swimming and one diving event. Dunnichay and Fogle teamed up to earn 24 team points for the Boilermakers on Friday. Purdue will enter the final day of the NCAA Championships in 23rd place (of 42 scoring teams) with 32 points.
Dunnichay closed out her diving career with a list score of 331.90 in the finals, good for an average award of 55.3. She improved on her prelim score by 10.05 points. In the prelims, she surged into the top eight by averaging an award of 59.4 over rounds two through five. The 2008 Olympian revealed earlier this season that due in part to injuries she planned to retire from competitive diving following the NCAA Championships.
Fogle posted a time of 59.20 in an extremely fast 100 breast championship final, won by Indiana's Lilly King with an American and NCAA-record time of 56.85. Fogle was an Honorable Mention All-American in both breaststroke events at the 2012 NCAA Championships. By comparison, Fogle's time of 59.20 would have been good for fourth place at the 2012 meet. Only the NCAA champion, Texas A&M's Breeja Larson, posted a sub 59-second time in 2012. Seven different swimmers in the championship final did so this year.
Also on Friday, sophomore Emmy Rawson made her debut at the NCAA Championships. Allie Davis and Kaersten Meitz competed in their third events of the meet. Rawson was 53rd in the prelims of the 100 butterfly. Davis was 27th and Meitz 47th in the prelims of the 200 freestyle.
The Boilermakers will once again be represented in four events Saturday at NCAAs. Six Purdue athletes are scheduled to compete, including Sydney Couch and Lexi Vincent in platform diving. Fogle and Rawson will compete in the 200 breast and 200 fly, respectively, the longer races being their strongest events. Meanwhile, Meitz is seeded 12th in the mile.
Saturday's Action begins with swimming prelims at 10 a.m. and diving prelims at 12:15 p.m. The first heat of the mile is set for 3:30 p.m. Finals are once again at 6 p.m.
