COLLEGE PARK, Md. ââ'¬" The Purdue women's tennis team was handed its first Big Ten loss of the season on Sunday, falling to Maryland 6-1 at The College Park Tennis Center. The No. 62nd-ranked Boilermakers slipped to 8-7 and 1-1 in the conference, while the Terrapins improved to 5-7, 2-1 in the Big Ten.
Boilermakers Claudia Escribens and Deborah Suarez blanked Nataliya Bredikhina Caroline Williams 6-0 in their first match of the season together at the No. 3 slot.
Thanks to a 7-6 (5) victory from the No. 2 doubles team of Andjela Djokovic and Marta Ruedas-Burgos over Maryland's tandem of Ekaterina Tour and Arnelle Sullivan, Purdue clinched the doubles point.
Maryland proved to be too much for Purdue in singles play claiming victories at all six singles positions. The top half of the Boilermakers' lineup all played to a third set, but they were unable to come out on top.
It will be two weeks before the women's tennis team returns to action, traveling to East Lansing, Michigan, for a noon ET contest vs. Michigan State on March 26.
