BURLINGAME, Calif. ââ'¬" Benjamin Ugarte provided a thrilling top-10 upset in a 6-1 loss to No. 14 Cal indoors at the Broadway Tennis Center on Sunday. The Boilermakers (11-3, 1-0 B1G) suffered just their third loss while going up against their highest ranked foe of the season in the 7-2 Golden Bears.
Ugarte's upset came in a tightly contested battle with 10th-ranked Andre Goransson. Goransson edged the redshirt junior 7-5 in the opening set at the No. 2 spot. The second set was Ugarte's, as he claimed it 6-4.
With the outcome of the dual match already decided, a 10-point tiebreaker was used in lieu of third set, which also went to Ugarte 10-7.
The win was his seventh in a row and his first going up against a ranked opponent. Ugarte lifted his record to 11-2 with all matches played at No. 2.
Cal captured the doubles point with 6-2 and 6-3 wins at Nos. 1 and 3, respectively. In singles, the bottom half of the Golden Bears' lineup posted straight set victories to secure the dual.
At No. 3, Ricky Medinilla jumped out to take the first set 6-4 over 37th-ranked Billy Griffith. The next two sets went to the Golden Bear however, 6-1, 6-2.
The men's tennis team returns to action Saturday to play host to Detroit Mercy at 6 p.m. ET at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
