Cifelli, Dunnichay Qualify for NCAAs Again

Results: Men's 1-Meter / Women's 3-Meter / Dive-by-Dive Scoring

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue's Joe Cifelli and Mary Beth Dunnichay will each compete in both springboard events at the NCAA Championships after they once again finished among the automatic-qualifying spots on day two of the Zone C Diving Championships at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.

Cifelli (720.00 two-list total) was the runner-up on 1-meter and Dunnichay (625.40) took third on 3-meter. After their automatic-qualifying finishes Thursday at Zones, both Boilermakers only needed to be among the top 12 Friday to earn the additional berths at NCAAs.

Max Showalter also qualified for the NCAA Championships in Thursday's 3-meter competition, but opted not to compete Friday on 1-meter. As one of Purdue's top platform divers, he's expected to be back in action Saturday as the focus shifts to the towers for both genders.

Sydney Couch (14th, 563.90) and Samm Reese (15th, 561.50) also advanced to women's 3-meter finals Friday but were unable to finish among the top seven auto-qualifying spots or the top 12 that would have earned them an NCAAs berth should they have auto-qualified in another event.

Reese had moved up to as high as fourth place through round four of the finals after her scores of 63.00 and 64.40 on her third and fourth dives, respectively, were both second best in those rounds of the competition. But she missed her fifth dive and was penalized with a zero on the failed dive. With only one round remaining, the sophomore was unable to overcome the setback.

As was the case Thursday in the women's 1-meter competition, there was again a very slim margin that separated the crucial final auto-qualifying spot and the remaining field of divers. Indiana's Michal Bower took seventh Friday with a two-list total of 589.05. That was only 7.10 points better than the 11th-place finisher.

Lexi Vincent and Couch will have their best opportunities to qualify for the NCAA Championships on the platforms Saturday. They will need to be among the top 10 in the women's competition tomorrow. Cifelli and Showalter will only need to be among the top 12 for the men. They are the four Boilermakers expected to compete Saturday. Action begins at 11 a.m. with the women's full competition and the men's prelims will follow.
