MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- After dropping four of their last five matches on the road, the No. 45 Purdue women's tennis team picked up a much-needed win over Memphis in a 6-1 victory at the University Club. With the win, the Boilermakers improved to 6-4 on the season.
Purdue got the ball rolling in doubles action with victories at the No. 2 and 3 positions. The duo of Krisztina Kapitany and Marta Ruedas-Burgos defeated Kathryn Hughes and Marta Morga of Memphis in a 6-1 decision at No. 2.
The Boilermaker pair of Claudia Escribens and Natalia Davila used a 6-2 match to clinch the doubles point, beating Gabrielle Paul and Tara McElroy. It was the second win in as many matches for both of the Purdue tandems.
Purdue's momentum from doubles carried into singles play as four of its victories were decided in straight sets. Ruedas-Burgos was the first of three victories for the Boilermakers, pushing their lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over McElroy at the No. 6 position. Nicole Robinson and Escribens followed with wins at Nos. 2 and 5, respectively, building Purdue's lead to 4-0. Escribens was credited with securing the dual victory.
The Tigers' earned their only point in the dual match at No. 1 with Hanna Sohn's win in the third set against Andjela Djokovic.
With the dual decided, Davila added to the Boilermakers' lead with a 6-2, 6-3 showing over Janina Berres and Krisztina Kapitany closed out play with a 6-4, 6-3 decision against Morga.
Purdue returns home to the Schwartz Tennis Center when they take on DePaul at 3 p.m. on Friday.
