WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Four A finalists in individual events coupled with a pair of fourth-place finishes highlighted Friday's action at the Big Ten Championships for Purdue men's swimming and diving.
Danny Conway took fourth in the A final of the 400 individual medley with a career-best time (3:47.02), the Boilermakers' 200 freestyle relay team also finished fourth and diver Joe Cifelli qualified for the A final of a springboard event for the second day in a row. The freshman placed fifth on 3-meter Friday.
Marat Amaltdinov, Austin Flager and Conway all accounted for career-best times that rank as the second-fastest times in program history. Amaltdinov finished sixth in the A final of the 100 breaststroke in 53.18. Flager was sixth in the A final of the 100 butterfly after posting a time of 46.83 in the prelims. Conway's 400 IM time matched teammate Josh Brooks for the second-best mark in the team record book.
Erik Juliusson established a new Purdue freshman record in the 100 backstroke, finishing third in the C final with a time of 47.91 that also ranks fourth overall in program history. Joe Young and Juliusson both eclipsed the previous freshman mark in the prelims. Alex Toetz and Young both scored in the butterfly and backstroke finals Friday.
Adam Noens rallied to win the B final of the 400 IM in lane eight. He posted 100-yard splits of 1:03.19 in the breast and 53.34 in the free over the second half of the race, the breaststroke segment being the fastest in the B final field. His winning time of 3:47.63 was good for fifth fastest in program history.

Purdue will enter the final day of action in sixth place with 501 team points, only 17 back of fifth-place Wisconsin (518). Just 10.5 points separates second-place Ohio State (855.5) and third-place Indiana (845).
The Boilermakers had four swimmers score in the 400 IM (61 points), 100 fly (44 points) and 100 back (14). Max Showalter and Cifelli teamed up for 40 team points in 3-meter diving after Showalter took fourth in the B final. Filip Bujoczek (4th in 200 free), Brooks (6th in 400 IM) and Young (8th in 100 fly) joined Noens and Showalter as B finalists Friday.
Chris Bals (100 breast), Joe Gardner (100 breast), Grant Lewis (400 IM), Stephen Seliskar (100 fly) and Jake Thomas (100 back) also scored with C final finishes.
Flager and Bujoczek teamed up with Adam Johnston and Nate Thomas on the 200 free relay team. The quartet posted the fifth-fastest time (1:18.18) in program history.

New pool records at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center were established in the 100 back, 100 breast, 200 free and the 200 free relay Friday. Ohio State's Matt McHugh swept the A finals of the 100 back and 100 fly, posting a new meet and pool record in the backstroke. He initially broke Matt Grevers' 2004 pool record in the prelims.
The Big Ten Championships conclude Saturday with prelims at 11 a.m. and finals at 6:30 p.m.
