RIO GRANDE, P.R. -- The No. 15-ranked Purdue men's golf team finished 10th at the highly competitive Puerto Rico Classic, finishing the 54-hole tournament at 7-over par 871 (286-290-295).
The tournament featured nine of the nation's top 41 and six of the top 20 teams. No. 17-ranked Alabama won the tournament at 25-under par 839 (276-287-276). Clemson was second (-16), Georgia (-13), Kentucky (-11) and North Carolina (-9) rounded out the top five.
Individually, Alabama held down the top two spots as Robby Shelton, ranked third in the country, won the event at 11-under par 205 (70-70-65) and Jonathan Hardee was second at 10-under par 206 (67-70-69). Shelton's final-round 65 was just one shot off the tournament-record 64 set by Shelton in 2014 and Texas' Dylan Fritelli in 2009.
Austin Eoff continued his recent strong play, posting a T-7th finish at 5-under par 211 (69-69-73). It marked his eighth straight top-10 finish, an ongoing school record. Eoff now has six top-10 finishes this year, already the third most in a season in school history. His 13 career top-10 finishes are the fifth most in school history.
However, Eoff's finish marked the only top-20 showing for the Boilermakers. Brian Carlson finished tied for 32nd at 1-over par 217 (72-74-71). Carlson was at 3-under par for his round until a double-bogey on his final hole dropped him over par for the tournament.
Stuart Macdonald was tied for 34th, one shot behind Carlson at 2-over par 218 (70-75-73). Fernando Barco finished tied for 54th at 9-over par 225 (75-72-78) and Timmy Hildebrand finished 75th at 26-over par 242 (79-85-78).
Purdue will return to action in two weeks at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate hosted by Michigan on March 5 and 6 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
