RIO GRANDE, P.R. ââ'¬"- The No. 15-ranked Purdue men's golf team struggled early, but finished strong and finds itself in a seventh-place tie after 18 holes at the loaded Puerto Rico Classic.
Action resumes with 18 holes on Monday at the 6.945-yard, par-72 River Course at the Rio Mar Resort and Spa. The field includes nine of the nation's top 41 teams and six teams ranked in the top 20.
Starting their rounds on holes 16-18, Purdue stumbled out of the gates, playing the front nine in a combined 10-over par. However, the Boilermakers got it going on the back nine, posting a combined 5-under par score to carry momentum into tomorrow second round.
The Boilermakers totaled a 2-under par 286 to sit 10 shots behind No. 7-ranked Alabama (276). No. 8-ranked North Carolina is two shots off the pace at 10-under par (278). Oklahoma (-7), Clemson (-5), Georgia (-4) and Kentucky (-3) round out the top six. Purdue is tied with No. 35-ranked Georgia Tech in seventh place.
Junior Austin Eoff continued his outstanding season by firing a 3-under par 69 to wrap up round one in a sixth-place tie. Eoff birdied two of his final five holes to record his sixth straight round of even-par or better and his 12th career round in the 60s. Eoff has now had a counting score in 30 straight rounds.
Senior Stuart Macdonald, who finished 10th in last year's event, recorded an opening-round 70 (-2) to sit T-11th after 18 holes. Macdonald was steady all day with three birdies against one bogey and recording 14 pars. It's his sixth round this year at even-par or better.
Sophomore Brian Carlson recovered from a difficult front nine to shoot an even-par 72 and finish the first round in a 32nd-place tie. Carlson was 4-over par through eight holes, but responded with four birdies in a five-hole stretch to get to even-par on his round for his 10th score (in 16 rounds) or even-par of better this year.
Fernando Barco rounded out Purdue's counting team with a 3-over par 75, while freshman Timmy Hildebrand, competing in his first stroke-play tournament, is 68th at 7-over par 79.
Purdue will be paired with Georgia Tech and Maryland in the second round and will tee off on holes 8 through 11 in Monday's second round, beginning at 8 a.m. ET.
