ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Four top-five finishes in A finals along with a pair of victories in B finals highlighted the final day of action at the Big Ten Championships for Purdue women's swimming and diving.
The Boilermakers (766.5 points) finished in fifth place in the team scoring for the second year in a row and fourth time since 2011. Senior Allie Davis was named Second Team All-Big Ten thanks in part to her runner-up finish in the A final of the 200 freestyle Friday. She was third in the B final of the 100 free Saturday.
In both the prelims and finals of the 200 backstroke, Maddie Barta eclipsed the Purdue freshman-record time she had established earlier this season. She won the B final with a time of 1:57.04, improving on her third-fastest time in program history. It was the seventh new record established by the Boilermakers this week, a total that includes three individual program records, three of the freshman variety and one new relay standard.
Emily Fogle's third-place finish in the A final of the 200 breaststroke was the top individual showing of the day by a Boilermaker. She also took third in the 100 breast Friday. Fogle posted a time of 2:08.07 while racing in the A final of the 200 breast at Big Tens for the fourth time in her career.
Kaersten Meitz (1650 free), Emmy Rawson (200 butterfly) and Lexi Vincent (platform diving) all finished fifth overall in their events Saturday, accounting for 25 team points each. Rawson posted the second-fastest 200 fly time (1:57.81) in program history and Meitz improved on her No. 2 all-time mark (16:04.04).
Along with Barta's B final victory, Sydney Couch also won the B final of platform diving and Alex Clarke was victorious in the C Final of the 200 fly.
Vincent, Couch and Morgan Meixner earned Purdue 57 team points in platform diving, making it the team's top-scoring event Saturday. Four Boilermakers scored in both the 1650 free (53 points) and 200 fly (46), both events also helping Purdue lock up the fifth-place finish.
Led by Meitz, the Boilermakers had four of the top 19 finishers in the mile. Nika Karlina Petric placed 14th, Emily Mecksroth was 17th and Lizzy Lyon 19th. Big Ten champion Michigan was the only other team with four of the top 19 finishers in the event.
Annie Spalding's career-best time (2:15.27), which qualified her for the C final of the 200 breast, was good for third in program history.
Meagan Lim (200 fly) and Morgan Meixner (platform diving) both qualified for a B final to earn double-figure team point totals in the events.
The Boilermakers capped the meet by posting the fifth-fastest time in program history in the 400 free relay. Davis, Grace Hernandez, Fogle and Meitz had the honor of competing in the final event of the seven-session conference championships competition.
Selected Boilermakers will compete next weekend at Ohio State's NCAA Last Chance Meet. Swimming qualifiers for the NCAA Championships are expected to be announced the first week of March. Purdue will host the Zone C Diving Championships from March 10 to 12. That meet will serve as the NCAA qualifier for the divers.
