WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ââ'¬" Purdue suffered its second consecutive loss, a 6-1 setback to No. 32 Notre Dame on Wednesday playing on the Basham Courts at the Schwartz Tennis Center. The 47th-ranked Boilermakers concluded their non-conference schedule with a 7-6 record. The Fighting Irish moved to 5-3, 1-0 ACC while dealing Purdue its first back-to-back home losses since 2009.
Doubles play was dominated by the Fighting Irish. At No. 2, Mary Closs and Julie Vrabel blanked Deborah Suarez and Krisztina Kapitany. The 15th-ranked duo of Quinn Gleason and Monica Robinson defeated Andjela Djokovic and Nicole Robinson 6-1 to gain the early lead.
Notre Dame's lead was extended to 2-0 with a 6-3 sweep from Closs over Natalia Davila at No. 4. Marta Ruedas-Burgos answered for the Boilermakers, defeating Vrabel 6-4, 6-3. The freshman from Toledo, Spain, pushed her record to 9-4 as Purdue's No. 6 singles player.
Allison Miller's 6-3 straight setter at No. 3 against Kapitany gave the Fighting Irish a 3-1 advantage. The match was clinched for Notre Dame with Brooke Broda's three-set rally past Claudia Escribens 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Play closed out at Nos. 1 and 2, both of which went to a third set. Andjela Djokovic came back to take the second set in the breaker 7-6 (2), but dropped the first and decisive third 7-5 and 6-1, respectively. At the top of the lineup, No. 44 Gleason's 6-2 and 6-3 showings in the first and third sets lifted her past Nicole Robinson's 7-6 (4) effort in the second.
It will be two weeks before the Boilermakers return to action, opening Big Ten play against Nebraska on March 5. First serves from the Schwartz Tennis Center are set for 10:30 a.m. ET.
