FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. ââ'¬" Kansas upset the No. 45 Purdue women's tennis team with a 4-1 setback Saturday at the Billingsley Tennis Center. The loss is the second of the season for the Boilermakers, who are now 5-2, while the Jayhawks moved to 3-0.
Purdue's Deborah Suarez and Krisztina Kapitany notched a 6-2 decision over Nina Khmelnitckaia and Janet Koch at the top of the doubles lineup, but the critical point went Kansas' way with wins at Nos. 2 and 3.
Summer Collins and Maria Jose Cardona defeated the Boilermakers' No. 2 duo of Andjela Djokovic and Marta Ruedas-Burgos 6-3. Purdue's No. 3 team of Claudia Escribens and Natalia Davila suffered their first loss of the spring season as Anastasiya Rychagova and Smith Hinton dealt them a 6-2 loss.
The Jayhawks secured the upset by winning in straight sets at singles Nos. 1 and 2 and Cardona prevailed in three sets over Ruedas-Bergos. The Boilermakers' lone point came by way of a 6-3, 6-4 showing from Kapitany vs. Khmelnitckaia at the No. 3 spot. The senior pushed her spring record to 7-0 with all of her matches played in the middle of the lineup.
Purdue returns to the Billingsley Tennis Center on Sunday to take on No. 36 Arkansas. First serves are set to be tossed at noon ET.
