WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The 44th-ranked Purdue women's tennis team opened their 2016 spring season by winning a pair of dual matches Saturday on the Basham Courts at the Schwartz Tennis Center. The Boilermakers cruised past Butler 6-1 and Ball State 5-2.
"I think it was a good start for the first day," Purdue head women's tennis coach Laura Glitz said. "I thought they worked hard, competed hard and had really good energy. To play two matches the first day is tough, but I thought they played pretty well."
The doubles team of Andjela Djokovic and Marta Ruedas-Burgos struck first against Butler's tandem of Konstantina Adami and Jocelyn Koester, beating the duo 6-1. The doubles point was clinched when the Boilermakers' No. 3 doubles team of Claudia Escribens and Natalia Davila bested Grace Hyde and Kailey Eaton by a matching score of 6-1.
Both duos carried their success into their second doubles match of the day against Ball State with Djokovic/Ruedas-Burgos defeating Peyton Gollhofer and Toni Ormond and Escribens/Davila topped the Cardinals' duo of Isabelle Dohanics and Audrey Berger. Both doubles matches were decided with a 6-3 decision.
In singles action, Purdue came out on top with four singles players recording two wins: No. 2 Djokovic, No. 3 Krisztina Kapitany, No. 4 Davila and No. 6 Ruedas-Burgos.
Ruedas-Burgos, a freshman from Toledo, Spain, finished her first collegiate dual match action unscathed with a 2-0 mark in doubles and singles.
Purdue returns to the Basham Courts at the Schwartz Tennis Center on Sunday for another doubleheader. The Boilermakers will face Eastern Michigan and IUPUI starting at 10 a.m. ET and 3 p.m., respectively.
