WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ââ'¬" The Purdue men's tennis team embraced the chance to start fresh and did so in commanding fashion, shutting out IUPUI and Toledo to start the 2016 campaign. Two new Boilermakers were at the forefront of the charge Saturday on the Basham Courts at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
"Starting the season off with two wins feels great," Purdue men's tennis assistant coach Michal Kokta said. "For some of our guys, they haven't played in three to four months. They were anxious to get out there. It's always good to start with a W and start the season off on a good foot. We have a long ways to go and we can get a lot better, but I feel like this was a good start."
Gergely Madarasz and Benjamin Ugarte shined in their Purdue debuts at the top of both the doubles and singles lineup. They made easy work of IUPUI's Kyle Whittaker and Bradley Luetschwager (6-1) and Omar Espinosa and Stjepan Sisko of Toledo (6-3).
At No. 1 singles, Madarasz surrendered no more than two games in 3 of 4 sets. Right behind him in the No. 2 slot, Ugarte easily disposed of the Jaguars' Marcus Nalley 6-0, 6-3. He then faced off against his doubles opponent from Toledo, Espinosa, and made quick work of him in a 6-1, 6-2 showing.
"I think Benjamin [Ugarte] was outstanding," Kokta said. "He won twice in his singles matches pretty easily, but I what I think was more impressive for me was his composure. He's very poised. These were the first dual matches he played in collegiate tennis and he handled it like a professional, like a senior, so it was very impressive to watch."
Ricky Medinilla and Dominik Sochurek also provided a pair of doubles victories. Playing at the No. 2 spot, the junior/freshman duo first disposed of IUPUI's Akshay Verma and David Beasley 6-3. They followed with a 6-1 win over Vince Anzalone and Reid Teatsorth of Toledo.
The bottom half of the Boilermakers' singles lineup shuffled in the two dual matches. Regardless of position, Sochurek, Mateus Silva and Lucas Dages played and came away with victories. Sochurek, who went at Nos. 3 and 4, and Silva, at Nos. 4 and 5, registered clean sweeps. Dages also swept while playing at No. 5 vs. the Jaguars' Luetschwager (7-6 (7-4), 6-3) and prevailed in the breaker while playing Stephen Miller of Toledo in a 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 6.
Renan Hanayama also won the in the breaker, posting a 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) decision vs. Louis Sacks of IUPUI at the sixth position. Medinilla came into the lineup at No. 3 against Toledo, beating Luka Vitosevic 6-3, 6-1.
The Boilermakers are back in action on the Basham Courts of the Schwartz Tennis Center on Jan. 23. It will be another doubleheader, first taking on Western Michigan at 1 p.m. ET, followed by Eastern Kentucky in a 6 p.m. dual match.
