ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Junior Ashley Morrissette drained a 3-pointer with seven seconds left to boost the Purdue women's basketball team to a 65-63 Big Ten Conference opening win at Michigan on Thursday at the Crisler Center. The Boilermakers improved to 10-2 (1-0 B1G) with the victory, while Michigan fell to 8-4 (0-1 B1G).
In a game that featured nine ties and nine lead changes, the Boilermakers found themselves trailing by six points with three minutes to play. The Purdue juniors took control as Bridget Perry scored six straight points, including four at the foul line, to tie the game 62-62, and Morrissette drained her triple in the closing seconds off a nice feed from senior April Wilson to post the final margin. The Boilermakers were called for a foul on a 3-point heave from the Wolverines with 0.3 seconds left, but Michigan was only able to convert 1-of-3 at the line.
Morrissette finished with 15 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Perry added 15 points, five rebounds four assists and two steals. Wilson tallied nine points, 11 assists and 3 steals, while sophomore Andreona Keys chipped in 14 points and six rebounds.
Sophomore Katelynn Flaherty had a game-high 19 points and five assists to lead Michigan, while freshman Hallie Thome had 14 points and six boards before fouling out.
Purdue returns to action Sunday, hosting Illinois at Mackey Arena at 2 p.m.
