IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The fall season came to a close for the Purdue men's tennis team at the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Sunday. The Boilermakers won five singles matches while playing at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
Arthur Dobradin and Lucas Dages led the way by going 2-1 at the tournament. All three of Dobradin's matches were decided in the third set. The senior posted back-to-back wins, first defeating Michigan's Tyler Gardiner (5-7, 6-4, 6-3) and then upset 12th-seeded Robin Haden of Iowa (6-7, 7-5, 6-1).
His run of winning in the third set was halted in the round of 16 by fifth-seeded David Kohan of Penn State 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. Dobradin wraps up his fall campaign with an 11-6 record.
Dages won his first match, taking down Michigan State's Jasper Koenen in straight sets (7-6 (5), 6-4), but suffered the same fate in the round of 32 in a 6-3, 6-2 loss to No. 11-seed Matt Galush of Penn State. The junior rebounded in a consolation match by beating Wisconsin's Elliott Sprecher 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 for his 11th fall victory.
After suffering a loss in the first round, Dominik Sochurek came back with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Alek Davila of Indiana in consolation play. The Purdue freshman was dealt a 6-2, 6-3 setback in this final match to another Hoosier, Chris Essick, to close out the fall season with an even mark of 8-8.
Sophomore Renan Hanayama concluded fall play by going 0-2 at the event.
The Boilermakers begin their spring season with a doubleheader Jan. 16, starting with IUPUI at noon ET and Toledo at 6 p.m.
