WTEN Goes 7-5 on Day 1 of Midwest Blast

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The Purdue women's tennis team tallied a total of seven victories on Day 1 of the Midwest Blast at the Atkins Tennis Center on Friday. Of the seven match victories, four came from doubles play, with Krisztina Kapitany, Nicole Robinson and Deborah Suarez coming away with a pair of wins.

In doubles, the lineup was rearranged each round and no two players competed together more than once for Purdue. Collectively, the Boilermakers went 4-2 in doubles matches against Illinois and Notre Dame.

Purdue picked up a decisive victory from Kapitany and Marta Ruedas-Burgos in an 8-3 victory over Illinois' Jaclyn Switkes and Grace Tapak. Robinson and Suarez teamed together for an 8-7 (2) breaker win vs. Louise Kwong and Ines Vias.

Kapitany and Suarez topped the Fighting Irish's Quinn Gleason and Brooke Broda (8-3), while Robinson and Andjela Djokovic defeated Julie Vrabel and Mary Closs 8-4.

Purdue split singles matches with Missouri 3-3. Action was highlighted by a straight-set victory with matching 6-4 sets coming from Suarez over Cassidy Spearman. After lopsided first and second sets, the Boilermakers rallied for a pair of three-set wins from Kapitany and Ruedas-Burgos. Kapitany bested Bea Machado Santos in a 6-0, 1-6, 7-6 (6) match and Ruedas-Burgos won a hard-fought 7-6 (1), 2-6, 6-2 decision against Turner Yates.

Action picks back up Saturday with Purdue competing against Notre Dame in singles at 10 a.m. ET, followed by doubles play against the Tigers at 12:30 p.m.
