BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 19 Boilermakers added their 30th 'P' link to the Monon Spike with a 3-0 sweep of Indiana on Wednesday night. Purdue won the match 25-22, 25-14, 25-18 to maintain possession of the Spike for the eighth straight season.
Senior Annie Drews led the offense with 13 kills, while hitting at a team-best .462 clip and adding eight digs and three blocks. Sophomore Danielle Cuttino managed 10 kills, hitting .429, to go with three blocks. Freshman Alexa Smith added eight kills, while redshirt junior Faye Adelaja put down seven and sophomore Azariah Stahl registered four. Adelaja put up a team-leading four blocks as Purdue outblocked Indiana 7-3.
Defensively, redshirt sophomore setter Ashley Evans led the way with 10 digs to go with her 28 assists and two blocks. Drews followed with eight, while freshman Brooke Peters and Smith added seven apiece and senior Amanda Neill managed six. Purdue hit at a .340 clip for the match, while holding Indiana to a .124 effort.
Purdue jumped out to a 5-1 advantage in Set 1 and led 11-8 before Indiana mounted a comeback. The Hoosier managed seven of the next nine points to go ahead 15-13. The Boilermakers tied it at 15-15 on back-to-back kills by Adelaja. Kills by Adelaja and Cuttino and a Hoosier service error knotted the score at 18. The Boilermakers closed out the set with a 8-4 run. The Boilermakers were up three at 22-19 and again at 23-20 after kills by Drews. The Hoosiers cut the margin to one at 23-22 prompting a Purdue timeout. A kill by Drews put Purdue on the hill and an IU hitting error ended the set. Drews had six kills, while Adelaja added five and Cuttino turned in four as the Boilermakers hit at a .351 clip.
The Boilermakers led Set 2 from start to finish, piling up six blocks and leading by as many as 11 en route to a 25-14 win. Purdue scored seven of the first 10 points including four stuffs, prompting an Indiana timeout. The Hoosiers scored the first point out of the break, but the Boilermakers racked up eight of the next 11 to boost the lead to 15-7 and force another IU timeout. Kills by Drews, Evans and Adelaja and a couple of Indiana miscues aided the effort. The Hoosiers cut the margin to six at 16-10, but the Boilermakers answered with six of the next seven points to pull away. A pair of kills by Smith put Purdue on the precipice at 24-13, while a putaway by Stahl sealed the win. Purdue hit .400 in the set, while holding the Hoosiers to a -.075 percentage.
The Boilermakers finished off the sweep with a 25-18 win in Set 3. Four different players tallied two or more kills in the stanza as Purdue hit .306 and allowed the Hoosiers just a .054 effort. The Boilermakers went up 7-2 early with help from four Hoosier miscues and two kills by Smith. Indiana cut the margin to two at 8-6, but Purdue maintained control, going up five at 13-8 as Cuttino pounded down three kills. The Hoosiers were within one at 15-14 after scoring six of the next eight, including two aces. The Boilermakers rallied to a four-point edge at 19-15 as Smith added two kills and an ace, forcing an IU timeout. A stuff by Adelaja and Evans kicked off a 4-0 Boilermaker run, which also featured kills by Cuttino and Stahl and an ace by Adelaja. A Hoosier block slowed Purdue for a moment, but a hitting error set up the final kill by Drews.
Purdue (14-2, 5-0 Big Ten) returns to action at 8 p.m. ET Saturday in a rematch with the Hoosiers. The match is sold out. Any tickets that become available will be up for purchase in the Athletics Ticket office beginning at 7 p.m.
