PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. -- Purdue's 46th-ranked duo of Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum and Krisztina Kapitany began Wednesday with an upset, but were denied a berth in the main draw of the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships at the Riviera Tennis Club.
In the Round of 16, the senior tandem easily handled 23rd-ranked and the draw's second-seeded Kate Vialle and Ashley Dai of North Carolina 8-3.
The upset was returned however when Bernard-Feigenbaum and Kapitany were edged in an 8-6 match to unranked Gabby Smith and Jessica Failla of USC. The win lifted the Trojans into the 25-team main draw, while Purdue bowed out of the tournament. Bernard-Feigenbaum and Kapitany finished with a 2-1 mark.
After suffering a loss in the first round of qualifying singles Tuesday, Bernard-Feigenbaum rebounded by upsetting 86th-ranked Sabrina Federici of Texas Tech in the back draw. The senior, who is tied at No. 114 nationally in the preseason rankings, was dealt a 6-4, 6-1 setback at the hands of Georgia's No. 88 Mariana Gould in the Round of 16. The loss ended Bernard-Feigenbaum's singles run at the Riviera Tennis Club.
The Purdue women's tennis team will be back in action when they play host to the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships. The five-day and 24-team tournament gets underway Oct. 15 at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
