Lane One Wins Lead Purdue Past Miami

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue men's swimming and diving was victorious in 12 of the 14 swimming events contested Friday evening to finish off a dual meet victory vs. Miami (Ohio) at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.

The Boilermakers had at least the top three finishers in the 50 free, 100 and 200 butterfly, 200 backstroke, 200 individual medley and 200 medley relay.

Five of Purdue's event victories came from lane one. Danny Conway also won the 200 butterfly in lane one but was disqualified for a flinch on starting blocks that was ruled a false start after the race.

Marat Amaltdinov and Josh Brooks finished tied for first with equal times of 1:52.90 in the 200 individual medley. Brooks was also the Boilermakers' top finisher in the 200 fly after Conway was DQed.

There was also a great finish in the 400 free relay when Jes Stephens closed out a victory for Purdue by five hundredths of a second. Joe Gardner, Tim Barth and Evan Barta also contributed to the relay win.

Freshmen Jackson Higgins (1000 free) and Grant Lewis (200 breast) both won events in lane one. Austin Flager (100) and Jake Thomas (200) teamed up to give the Boilermakers a sweep of the backstroke events, both also winning from lane one.

Nate Hopkins posted a new Purdue season-best time in the 500 free while winning the event. Adam Johnston (50) and Nate Thomas (100) teamed up for a sweep of the freestyle sprints. Thomas's victory also came frome lane one. Alex Toetz continued his winning ways by touching first in the 100 butterfly.

Purdue entered the night with 22-16 lead after Joe Cifelli swept the springboard diving Oct. 16 in Oxford.

The Boilermakers return to action Nov. 6 when they host Iowa at 5 p.m. However, the men's divers are scheduled to compete Saturday at the women's triple dual with Notre Dame and Ohio State, which are also bring their men's divers.
