USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships / Crusader Indoor Invitational Results
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- For the second time in his career, Ricky Medinilla has won his way into the semifinals of the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships. The Purdue junior is one four still alive out of the original 128-player draw that started playing Thursday at the Goodfriend Tennis Center. Semifinal first serves will be tossed Sunday at noon ET.
Medinilla posted matching set scores of 7-5 over Louisville's Brandon Lancaster in the quarterfinals Saturday to secure his spot in the semifinals. His upcoming opponent, Eduardo Mena of Tennessee Tech, needed a third set to get past Robert Herrera of East Tennessee State in the quarterfinals.
On the other half of the draw, it will be Louisville's Alex Gornet vs. Indiana's Sam Monette.
The day began for Medinilla in the round of 16, where he jumped out with a 6-2 first set against Igor Smelyanski of Tennessee. The Volunteer evened the battle by taking the second 6-4. Medinilla responded with a 6-4 showing of his own to win the match for his second three-set victory of the tournament.
Lucas Dages and Arthur Dobradin each saw their run at the tournament come to an end in the consolation draw. After winning the opening set 6-3, Dages fell in the second (6-3) and in the 10-point tiebreaker (10-5) to Nemanja Guzina of Ball State. Dobradin dropped a 6-4, 6-1 straight-setter to Indiana's Matthew McCoy.
The other half of the Purdue men's tennis team has also been in action at the Crusader Indoor Invitational in Valparaiso, Indiana. On Friday, Matt Bouggy, Renan Hanayama and Dominik Sochurek each came away victorious while playing at The Courts of Northwest Indiana. The trio of Boilermakers combined to surrender just three games as they each won in straight sets. Bouggy was credited with a shutout, blanking Western Illinois' Brady Smith.
