Kapitany, Robinson Move to Round of 32

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ââ'¬" Purdue's Krisztina Kapitany won in three and Nicole Robinson posted a straight-setter as each moved into the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships' singles round of 32 Friday. Play resumes from the Basham Courts at the Schwartz Tennis Center on Saturday at 8 a.m. ET with doubles quarterfinals.

After being edged 7-5 in the opening set against Hitomi Naito of UT Martin, Kapitany claimed the next two sets 6-2, 6-4, respectively, and ultimately the match. Up next for the senior is Tennessee's Eve Repic at 9 a.m.

Robinson battled Northern Kentucky's Klara Skopac to two deep sets and came out on top 7-5, 7-6 (6). At 11 a.m. Saturday she will take on Ola Mally of Louisville.

Purdue's two other main draw players, Natalia Davila and Deborah Suarez, dropped their opening matches and fell into the consolation draw.

Andjela Djokovic, Claudia Escribens and Marta Ruedas-Burgos each picked up a singles victory in extra consolation matches.

In doubles, one of the Boilermakers' tandems picked up a first-round victory, but stumbled in the round of 16, sending them into consolation play. The junior duo of Djokovic and Robinson defeated Ashley Bongart and Brittany Lindl of Tennessee 8-7 (1). They then suffered an 8-6 setback to Vanderbilt's fourth-seeded team of Sydney Campbell and Fernanda Contreras.

Frances Altick and Ellie Yates of Vanderbilt defeated Davila and Suarez 8-5, sending the Boilermakers into the consolation draw. They were able to rebound by defeating Taylor Culbertson and Karoline Haller of Wright State 8-2. The duo will continue consolation play Saturday.
