KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Purdue's Ricky Medinilla and Mateus Silva each punched their ticket into the singles round of 32 at the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships playing at the Goodfriend Tennis Center and Knoxville Racquet Club on Thursday. Both Boilermakers prevailed in the third set in their first matchup and cruised to victory in their second matches. They'll be back in action Friday, starting with Medinilla at 12:30 p.m. ET.
After dropping the opening set 6-3 to Vanderbilt's sixth-seeded Rhys Johnson, Medinilla stormed back by taking the second set 6-1 and the decisive set 7-5. He dominated Conner Andersen of Ball State of Ball State in his next match, winning 6-2, 6-0. The junior will square off against Dima Zyhmantovich of Middle Tennessee State.
Silva opened with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Pen Binet of Vanderbilt. The senior then disposed of Memphis' Felix Rauch in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. His round of 32 opponent will be Preston Touliatos of Tennessee. The two are scheduled to collide at 1 p.m.
Purdue's Lucas Dages and Arthur Dobradin were sent into the 32-player singles consolation B draw after suffering losses in the round of 128.
Dayton's Jordan Benjamin and Lorenzo Rollhauser tripped up the Boilermakers' lone doubles team in the tournament, Dages and Silva, in the round of 64 by an 8-6 decision to eliminate the duo.
