CARMEL, Ind. --- The No. 24-ranked Purdue men's golf team continued its sizzling start to the 2015-16 campaign with a second-place finish at the Crooked Stick Intercollegiate, its second runner-up finish of the young season.
The Boilermakers totaled a three-round total of 21-over par 885 (292-293-300) to finish 19 shots behind top-ranked Illinois. No. 7-ranked Duke was third at 30-over par 894 (293-298-303), while No. 29-ranked Kentucky was fourth at 33-over par 897 (300-290-307).
Despite posting its highest score of the week in the final round, Purdue still shot the second-best score of the day behind the top-ranked Illini, as scoring was difficult at a wind-swept Crooked Stick Golf Club.
It marks the fourth straight top-four finish for the Boilermakers to start the season and Purdue has finished second, tied for fourth, first and second in its first four events this fall, posting a 45-5-1 head-to-head record in the process. Purdue's head-to-head losses are twice to No. 1 Illinois, California, East Tennessee State and Michigan.
Austin Eoff and Brian Carlson each led the Purdue contingent, tying for third at even-par 216.
Eoff totaled rounds of 75-69-72=216, giving him 39 (of 87) career rounds at even-par or better. Eoff was 2-under par through nine holes today and 1-under par through 16 before a late bogey dropped him to even-par on his round. Nonetheless, the third-place showing marked his fifth career top-5 finish and second straight after finishing tied for third at the Windon Memorial Classic.
Carlson recorded rounds of 70-72-74=216 for his third-place finish. Carlson made the turn at 3-over par after a double bogey-par-bogey finish on the front nine, but eventually climbed to 1-over par following a birdie on No. 15. He bogeyed No. 18 to drop back to 2-over par for his round. He would record his second straight, and second career, top-three finish after winning the Windon Memorial Classic two weeks ago.
Senior Stuart Macdonald recorded his ninth top-20 finish with a 16th-pace effort on rounds of 73-77-76=226. Macdonald was 1-under par through 11 holes today, but went 5-over par over his last seven holes. However, he has now recorded two straight top-20 finishes for just the second time in his career (26 events).
