CARMEL, Ind. ââ'¬"- The No. 24-ranked Purdue men's golf put together two solid rounds on a windy day and sit in second place after 36 holes at the Crooked Stick Intercollegiate held at Crooked Stick Golf Club.
The Boilermakers shot a 36-hole total of 9-over par 585 (292-293) to trail No. 1-ranked Illinois by nine shots (297-279=576). Kentucky is third at 14-over par 590 (300-290) while No. 6-ranked Duke is fourth at 15-over par 591 (293-298).
Purdue actually led after the first round with a 4-over par 292, leading Duke and Xavier by one shot, but the top-ranked Illini showed why they are the nation's top-ranked team, posting the best 18-hole score by 11 shots in the second round.
The Boilermakers have four players in the top 20, led by sophomore Brian Carlson. The Madison, Connecticut, native picked up where he left off two weeks ago by finishing the first two rounds with a score of 2-under par 142 (70-72). Carlson, who won the Windon Memorial Classic two weeks ago for his first career individual title, is tied for second, eight shots behind Kentucky's Tyler McDaniel (-10). Carlson recorded five birdies, three bogeys and 28 pars in a steady day at Crooked Stick.
Junior Austin Eoff is tied for fifth at even-par 144 (75-69). Eoff had an up-and-down first round, registering one eagle, one birdie, four bogeys and a double-bogey, before a strong second round moved him up the leaderboard. Eoff got as low as 4-under par in his second round, before finishing with a 3-under par 69. He played the par-5 15th hole in 4-under par, registering a pair of eagles on the hole during the day.
Freshman Jarle Volden is tied for 15th at 5-over par 149 (74-75). Volden had no holes of double-bogey or worse on his day while recording four birdies against nine bogeys. Volden is looking for his first career top-10 finish.
Senior Stuart Macdonald is tied for 19th at 6-over par 150 (73-77). Macdonald had a strong first round with four birdies against five bogeys and was 1-over par through 14 holes in the second round, before playing the final four holes in 4-over par for his second-round 77.
Junior Fernando Barco struggled all day and is tied for 40th at 12-over par 156 (77-79).
Individually, Chad Phillips is tied for 29th at 10-over par 154 (77-77).
Purdue will tee off the final round on Tuesday off hole No. 1, beginning at 9:45 a.m. ET. The Boilermakers will be paired with Illinois and Kentucky.
