GLENCOE, Ill. ââ'¬"- With four players finishing in the top three of the medalist race, the Purdue men's golf team put together a dominating performance to run away with the team title at the Windon Memorial Classic, defeating Michigan by a whopping 15 shots.
The Boilermakers shot a 22-under par 830 (281-272-277) to earn the wire-to-wire victory. Michigan was second at 7-under par 845 (282-279-284) while the host school, Northwestern, was third at 4-under par (284-279-284). Purdue posted the tournament's lowest scores in all three rounds in earning the first victory of the Rob Bradley era and first win as a program since April 2011.
"We have really worked hard to break into the win column and have been so close before. It's a nice feeling to finally get that win," Bradley said, now in his third year at Purdue. "It has to be special for our senior, Stuart (Macdonald), and the other guys that have been here since day one. They've put in a lot of work, so I'm sure it's rewarding for them. Winning is a lot of fun and I'm glad we were able to experience it."
Purdue placed four players in the top three, led by sophomore Brian Carlson. The Madison, Connecticut, native started the day in a tie for sixth, but shot a final-round, 3-under par 68 to earn his first individual title, totaling 6-under par 207 (72-67-68). Carlson led the tournament field in birdies (16) and offset a late bogey on No. 16 with a clutch birdie on No. 18 to earn the two-shot victory over North Texas' Thomas Rosenmuller.
"All four of our guys had a chance and that made today even better," Bradley added. "He probably played the most steady and most consistent of our group. He knew where he stood on the 18th tee and went out and made great swings and knew what he needed to do. All five of our guys played great, and if you throw out two bad holes yesterday for Jarle (Volden), we would have had all five guys in the top 10."
Three Boilermakers tied for third at 3-under par 210. Junior Austin Eoff recorded his fifth straight top-10 finish after rounds of 71-69-70=210. Eoff started his day with a double-bogey on No. 1, but climbed back to even-par after consecutive birdies on Nos. 7 and 8. He then parred nine of the next 10 holes with a birdie on No. 15 to move to 1-under par for his round, matching his highest career finish (3rd at 2013 Crooked Stick Invitational).
Junior Fernando Barco continued his improvement, also finishing tied for third at 3-under par 210 (71-69-70). Barco was 2-over par through six holes, but quickly got to 2-under par for his round after birdies on four of his next seven holes. A bogey on No. 16 dropped him to 1-under par for the round, but he finished with pars in recording his highest career finish and second straight top-10 finish.
Macdonald was the third Boilermaker player to finish at 3-under par 210 (68-67-75). Macdonald led the field for most of the day, before a pair of bogeys on Nos. 15 and 18 dropped him to third. Nevertheless, the finish was the best of his career and marked his fifth career top-10 placing.
Freshman Jarle Volden finished tied for 24th at 2-over par 215 (71-75-69). Volden played spectacular golf on the front nine, posting a 3-under 33 on the way out, before playing the back nine in 1-over par 36.
Playing as an individual, Chad Phillips finished tied for 66th at 14-over par 227 (78-75-74).
Purdue will take next weekend off before heading to the Crooked Stick Invitational in Carmel, Indiana, on Oct. 12-13.
