Duo Advances to Bradley Invitational Finals

PEORIA, Ill. -- The Purdue women's tennis duo of Claudia Escribens and Grace Schaffer advanced to the doubles finals of Flight A Saturday at the Bradley Invitational. Sunday's finals are set for an 11 a.m. ET start from the David Markin Tennis Courts.

Day 2 consisted of the doubles semifinal round followed by the singles quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. Escribens and Schaffer began the day with an 8-6 semifinal win over Chicago duo of Kaela Bynoe and Ariana Iranpour. The tandem will take on Kadi Ilves and Marcia Tere-Apisah of Illinois State in the championship match.

In singles, Schaffer jumped out to a good start with a 6-4, 6-1 win in the quarterfinal round against University of Chicago's Tiffany Chen. Advancing to the semifinals in singles, Schaffer fell 6-1, 6-2 to Rachel Kim from Chicago State. Escribens competed against Illinois State's Tere-Apisah in the consolation round and would fell, 7-5, 6-3.

The first day of action featured two rounds of doubles and one round of singles. After receiving a first-round bye in the 12-team Flight A doubles draw, the Boilermaker duo faced off against Chicago's Rachel Kim and Courtney Warren. Purdue came out on top, beating the Phoenix tandem 8-2.

Singles action saw Schaffer best Chicago's Lucy Tang, 6-4, 7-6 (1), to advance to the quarterfinals. Escribens fell to Indiana State's in her first match against Veronika Golanova 6-3, 6-3.

Seven teams are represented in the tournament: Bradley, Chicago, Chicago State, Illinois State, IUPUI, Purdue and Western Illinois.
